Binero's data centre first in the world to be environmentally certified by fossil free data

Binero's sustainability work is achieving new successes as the company's data centre in Vallentuna has now received the global ecolabel Fossil Free Data. This means that Binero's data centre meets strict requirements to be energy efficient, have low carbon emissions and use 100% renewable electricity.

Many people see digitalisation and increased use of data as climate-smart, but it also has a major impact on the climate as many of the world's data centres are powered by fossil fuels. Already today, data storage accounts for more than two per cent of global carbon emissions and three per cent of global energy consumption. This means that data storage's carbon dioxide emissions are on a par with the global aviation industry, according to the scientific journal Nature.

Evidence of high efficiency and recycling

Environmental certification through Fossil Free Data confirms successful sustainability efforts for data centres that meet strict requirements for efficient energy use. The certification provides clear proof that customers' systems and data are managed in a sustainable way.

"It is incredibly exciting to be able to certify Binero according to this new standard. With its large share of renewable energy, Sweden has an excellent starting point for sustainable data centres and Binero shows the way for more climate-smart data storage and use,’ says Patrik Öhlund, CEO of Node Pole.

Binero's certified data centre is located on land that has already been connected to the district heating network in Vallentuna. The entire facility runs on green energy and the closed system sends cold water in and hot water out, with the result that the excess heat is used to heat the municipality's property stock.

"Binero has a well-developed sustainability strategy for our data centres, where we have invested heavily in energy recovery, low-power technology and cooling solutions - without compromising on technology, performance or security. On the contrary, we maintain the highest classification there as well,’ says Stefan Andersson, CEO of Binero Group.

The company is now investing further, including in its own public cloud service - infrastructure as a service based on OpenStack, which is based on the certified data centre in Vallentuna. The company thus offers a close and more sustainable choice for Swedish companies that want to make the journey to the cloud, as an alternative and complement to the major foreign cloud providers.
