Bineros data center first in the world to be certified fossil free by Fossil Free Data

Bineros' sustainability efforts have achieved new success as the company's data center in Vallentuna has now received the global Fossil Free Data environmental certification. This means that Bineros' data center meets strict requirements for energy efficiency, low carbon dioxide emissions, and the use of 100% renewable electricity.

Many see digitalization and increased use of data as climate-smart, but it also has a major impact on the climate, as many of the world's data centers are powered by fossil fuels. Data storage already accounts for just over two percent of global carbon dioxide emissions and three percent of the world's energy consumption. This means that carbon dioxide emissions from data storage are on a par with the global aviation industry, according to the scientific journal Nature.

Proof of high efficiency and recycling

An environmental certification via Fossil Free Data confirms successful sustainability work for data centers that meet strict requirements for efficient energy use. The certification provides clear proof that customers' systems and data are handled in a sustainable manner.

“It is incredibly exciting to certify Binero according to this new standard. With its high share of renewable energy, Sweden is in an excellent position for sustainable data centers, and Binero is leading the way for more climate-smart data storage and use,” says Patrik Öhlund, CEO at Node Pole.

Bineros' certified data center is located on land that was previously connected to the district heating network in Vallentuna. The entire facility is powered by green energy, and in the closed system, cold water is sent in and hot water is sent out, with the result that surplus heat is used to heat the municipality's property portfolio.

“Binero has a well-developed sustainability strategy for our data centers, where we have invested heavily in energy recovery, energy-efficient technology, and cooling solutions—without compromising on technology, performance, or security. On the contrary, we maintain the highest ratings in these areas as well,” says Stefan Andersson, former CEO at Binero Group.

The company is now investing further, including in its own public cloud service – infrastructure as a service based on OpenStack, which is based at the certified data center in Vallentuna. The company thus offers a close and more sustainable choice for Swedish companies that want to move to the cloud, as an alternative and complement to the large foreign cloud providers.
